Cable sizing vs voltage drop

A practical guide to current, cable ampacity, voltage drop, breaker size, derating, and electrical planning checks.

Short answer

Cable sizing checks whether the conductor can safely carry the design current after derating. Voltage drop checks whether the same cable can keep voltage at the load within the project limit. A cable can pass ampacity and still fail voltage drop on a long route.
