Fire Alarm DIP Switch Calculator: engineer's guide
Conventional and semi-addressable fire alarm devices use DIP switches to set the device address in binary.

What this calculator does
The calculator converts a decimal device number into a binary DIP switch pattern and displays which switches to set ON.
Formulas used
- Binary conversion:
Address = Σ (DIPi × 2i-1) for i = 1..N
Variables
- DIPi = 1 for ON, 0 for OFF
- i = switch position, 1 being least significant
Worked example
Scenario: Device address 42 on an 8-DIP addressable module.
- 42 in binary = 00101010
- DIP switches ON: positions 2, 4, 6 (values 2 + 8 + 32 = 42)
- DIP switches OFF: positions 1, 3, 5, 7, 8
Common mistakes to avoid
- Reading switch position 1 as MSB instead of LSB (manufacturer varies)
- Duplicate addresses on the same loop
- Not documenting the address vs device location matrix
Frequently asked questions
What is the address range?
1 to 127 typical for 7-DIP addressable panels; 1 to 255 for 8-DIP.
Do addressable devices need DIP?
Some, some not — smart addressable devices are software-programmed via the panel.
