CFM vs TR for HVAC planning

Learn when to use CFM, TR, airflow, cooling load, and ventilation calculators for HVAC planning.

Short answer

TR is cooling capacity. CFM is airflow. They are linked, but they are not the same engineering question. If you know the cooling load, use TR to CFM to estimate supply airflow. If you only know the room, start with cooling load or airflow methods first.

Use CFM checks for duct sizing, diffuser selection, ventilation, ACH, and air distribution. Use TR checks for equipment capacity, chiller/FCU/AHU planning, and cooling load sanity checks.
