Data Rack UPS Calculator: engineer's guide
Rack UPS is sized on the sum of IT loads plus growth margin, with autonomy time from battery Ah at the load kW.

What this calculator does
The calculator sums UPS kW, applies PF and growth, and returns the required VA rating plus battery Ah for the target autonomy.
Formulas used
- UPS VA:
VA = Σ WIT × Kgrowth / PF - Battery energy:
kWh = kWload × tautonomy
Variables
- PF = UPS output power factor, 0.9 to 1.0 modern units
- Kgrowth = 1.2 to 1.4 headroom
Worked example
Scenario: Rack with 3 x 500 W servers, 2 switches at 100 W each, target 10 min autonomy.
- WIT = 3 × 500 + 2 × 100 = 1700 W
- With 30% growth: 2210 W. At PF 0.95: 2326 VA → select 3000 VA UPS
- Battery energy = 2.21 × 10/60 = 0.37 kWh
- At 48 VDC string, Ah = 370 / 48 ≈ 7.7 Ah; select internal battery pack
Common mistakes to avoid
- Sizing UPS on server nameplate (real load is 40 to 60% of nameplate)
- Ignoring inrush of switch-mode power supplies
- No external battery cabinet allowance for long-runtime
- Bypass switch missing for maintenance
Frequently asked questions
Online (double-conversion) or line-interactive?
Online for critical/sensitive loads and dirty utility; line-interactive for office IT.
Lithium or VRLA?
Lithium lasts 8 to 10 years vs 3 to 5 for VRLA; higher capex, lower TCO.
